Metallic glass 600 times stronger than steel will BOUNCE if its dropped

But a new type of glass that is stronger than titanium while also being elastic could soon be used to create phones that are able to bounce when they are dropped. The material, which is a form of metallic glass made from iron, could also be used to build new types of body armour and help protect satellites from meteor strikes while in orbit. Engineers have developed a new material (crystal structure pictured left and right at different magnifications) that is 588 times more resistant to damage than stainless steel and can bounce. It could be used to create new types of body armour, to protect satellites from meteors or to prevent phones from smashing when dropped Tests have shown the material, which is called SAM2X5-630, is 588 times more resistant to damage than stainless steel and has twice the resistance of tungsten carbide ceramic used in body armour. Professor Veronica Eliasson, an engineer at the University of Southern California, said the material’s unusual chemical structure is what makes it so hard yet also elastic. Engineers at the University of California San Diego used a technique called spark-plasma sintering to create the new metallic glass. They did this by ...

The particles are one-fifth the diameter of a human hair. They lodge deep in the lungs

The particles are one-fifth the diameter of a human hair. They lodge deep in the lungs and never come back out. Children and the elderly are particularly affected. They cause lung cancer, lower resistance to disease, and make it difficult to breathe. It’s impossible to accurately estimate the deaths that occur as a result of exposure, but the EPA has suggested that it could be between 500 and 8,000 per million people. Toxic exhaust from diesel engines, in both the form of gases and particulate matter, is a major contributor to health problems. It is also a leading cause of smog, which has led Paris to ban diesel cars on alternate days during high-smog periods and to plan for a comprehensive ban on diesel passenger vehicles in the city by 2020. After years of CO2-centric policies that all but forced consumers to abandon gasoline-powered cars in favor of diesel alternatives that emitted 10 percent or so less carbon dioxide, cities on the Continent have now been forced to admit that smog is a bigger and deadlier short-term problem than the minor contributions of private automobiles to climate change. Paris, London, and other cities will now be forced to use a combination of dracon...

Township to toughen water protections | News, Sports, Jobs

ALPENA TOWNSHIP — The Charter Township of Alpena is working on a new ordinance geared toward tackling the illegal or unsafe dumping or discharge of materials or chemicals that could be harmful to humans, the environment, or critical water and sewer infrastructure in the township and city of Alpena. Ordinance No. 140 not only places tighter restrictions on what is disposed of via the drain system, but also in surface and ground water, septic systems, dry wells or onto the ground. Township Supervisor Nathan Skibbe said the ordinance is intended to make sure that businesses or individuals discharge materials in a way that is in accordance with the federal, state and local regulations. “The last thing that we ever want to allow is any negative behavior that would detriment our infrastructure,” he said. “It is our duty as a municipality to secure the well-being and safety of of our water and sewer customers and residents for the township and city alike. We are all affected by water and sewer, and anything we can do to do give them the highest level of security and safety we are obligated to do.” A portion of the township utilizes its own water and sewer system, but the township also ...

Olympus Teleconverter MC-20 gets your zoom 2x as close

Olympus knows you probably want to get closer with your zoom, and the new M.Zuiko Digital 2x Teleconverter MC-20 promises double the focal length of your existing lens for when its current magnification just isn’t enough. The add-on slots in-between your camera and a handful of Olympus’ zoom lenses, delivering up to 1200mm-equivalent handheld shots. It’s the follow-up to the MC-14 Teleconverter, which delivers a 1.4x magnification. Olympus is targeting nature photographers and similar with the MC-20, who may find the idea of getting closer to skittish wildlife without disturbing the critters a tempting one. With the M.Zuiko Digital ED 300mm F4.0 IS PRO, for example, photographers will be able to shoot near actual size at 0.96x. The lens on its own would normally top out at 0.48x magnification. Throw in Focus Stacking, meanwhile, and the typical shallow depth of field needn’t be a problem either, with multiple frames combined into something that’s in focus across the whole image. It’s not just bumping up performance from a distance, however. Olympus is also pitching the MC-20 as handy for those doing super-telephoto macro shots. With the ED 300mm F4.0 IS PRO, for instance, the c...
