Welcome to Curbed Comparisons, a weekly column that explores what one can buy for a set

Welcome to Curbed Comparisons, a weekly column that explores what one can buy for a set dollar amount in various NYC neighborhoods. Is one man’s studio another man’s townhouse? Let’s find out! Today, we’re looking at apartments for sale for around $1 million. A two-bedroom in one of the prettiest buildings in Prospect Heights is asking $998,000. The duplex co-op is located in the former P.S.9 School Annex building, a landmarked Romanesque Revival building close to Vanderbilt Avenue. In addition to the two bedrooms, it has high ceilings, one and a half bathrooms, a large living room, and a washer/dryer. On the Upper East Side, a two-bedroom co-op in a doorman building is going for $989,000. The apartment has plenty of storage space—lots of kitchen cabinets, built-ins in the living room, and more—and spacious bedrooms, and the kitchen itself is separated from the rest of the apartment. It’s located on East 82nd Street between Second and Third avenues. An entire townhouse in Ridgewood is asking $975,000. It’s not a huge house—around 1,275 square feet, according to the listing—and it’s in need of some updates, but it has good bones. There are two bedrooms, a den, one bathroom, an e...

New parents have enough to worry about without wondering if their baby monitor is up to

New parents have enough to worry about without wondering if their baby monitor is up to the task. Fortunately, they don’t have to — we’ve looked at more than half-a-dozen mounted cameras that beam live video from a nursery, and the best baby monitor we’ve tested is Netgear’s Arlo Baby. Netgear’s baby monitor packs in a number of must-have features such as clear 1080p video, two-way audio and a host of sensors. Everything’s easily accessible from a well-organized mobile app that puts the Arlo Baby’s controls at your fingertips. Best of all, since we first reviewed the Arlo Baby, many retailers are selling it at a discount. People who want an even bigger bargain may prefer the iBaby M6T. Though it’s a couple years old at this point and records video in in 720p resolution, it’s still a capable monitor with night vision, two-way audio and helpful pan-and-tilt capabilities. It’s also available for less than the Arlo Baby, with frequent discounts sometimes bringing the price down to $100 or less. If the voice-powered Alexa assistant is a part of your family, consider the Project Nursery Smart Baby Monitor, which includes a sm...

Ace Pump Corporation announced the launch of its new Gemini dual pump kit. The kit allows a user to operate two Ace Pumps independently from a single hydraulic supply and control them manually or with a PWM (pulse width modulated) control signal. “Given the growing agricultural trends of precision application and variable rate application, we believe our Gemini dual pump kit is a much needed accessory, noted Andy Randle, president of Ace Pump.  “We designed the kit with maximum flexibility out of the box, knowing that our customers are extremely capable and will use it to streamline their application processes.  The Gemini kit is designed to control any combination of Ace’s popular FMC-HYD Series pumps powered by our 204 and 206 motors.  Once installed on a planter or sprayer, it allows operators to quickly and easily dial-in separate application rates for liquid fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides and other crop inputs. 45l/Min Hydraulic Monoblock Valve The Gemini dual pump kit is designed for use on tractors with either load sensing closed center (LS closed) or pressure compensated closed center (PC closed) hydraulic systems.  Oil may be supplied from one se...

It’s annoying when you run out of Ethernet ports on your router. That, or when you

It’s annoying when you run out of Ethernet ports on your router. That, or when you have a home entertainment center and want wired connections for all your devices, but you don’t want to string a bundle of Ethernet cables from your living room to wherever your router happens to be. One of the best ways to extend your wired network at home is to pick up a network switch. To keep it simple, a switch is like a hub. You connect your devices to it, and then connect the switch to your router. Your devices will then be able to access your home network as if they were connected to the router directly. It’s as easy as that. Type “network switch” into your favorite online shopping site (or search engine), and you’ll see a ton of listings for switches of all kinds—and price levels. Picking the best switch for your needs isn’t too tricky, but there are a few concepts you’ll want to better understand so you don’t buy the wrong device or overspend needlessly. If you remember nothing else, know that the best switch for you is probably a simple, unmanaged network switch. The price you’ll pay is likely dictated by how many ports your switch needs to have and their speed. For example, a five-port...

How Small Can an RFID Tag Be? — Ask The Experts Forum

How can I make a really tiny tag—only 3 to 5 millimeters—and what limits are there for passive RFID? There is a passive ultrahigh-frequency (UHF) tag currently on the market from Hitachi, known as the µ-chip (mu chip), that measures 0.3 millimeter square (0.01 inch square). The antenna is etched into the chip, which carries a 128-bit serial number (see Hitachi Unveils Smallest RFID Chip). In addition, Murata Manufacturing Co. offers a high-frequency (HF) tag (model LXMS33HCNG-134) that measures 3.2 millimeters (0.13 inch) in width and length, and 0.7 millimeter (0.03 inch) in thickness It has 1024 bits of memory (see Murata Mass-Produces ‘World’s Smallest HF Tag’). It is possible to produce a small tag with a greater amount of memory (up to 2 kilobytes). However, a very small tag would have a very short read range, since a small antenna can capture a lot of energy from a reader, but it cannot reflect back a strong signal to a reader antenna. Ressence Type 2 Watch: Mechanical Meets Smart Tech at SIHH

Last year around this time, Ressence unveiled the Type 2 e-Crown Concept, a concept watch that first introduced the world to the idea of the “e-Crown,” an electronic device fitted inside the mechanical watch that would allow the watch to essentially reset itself to the correct time after the power reserve has run down (among other things). I was pretty excited when it was first announced and got even more excited upon seeing a prototype during SIHH 2018. I wasn’t the only one, either: My colleague Jon named the concept watch his most exciting independent watch of 2018 just a few months later. At the time though, the watch wasn’t yet ready for full production and still needed a few tweaks to get ready for the big time. We were told we’d have to wait a bit before seeing the Type 2 available for collectors. Luckily that wait is now over. The production version of the Type 2 is very similar to the concept version we saw last year. I’m not going to rehash all the nitty-gritty details here, but if you want to learn more about how the watch works and why it was created I recommend you check out our video interview with Ressence founder Benoît Mintien...

National MagLab creates world-record magnetic field with small, compact coil

A novel magnet half the size of a cardboard toilet tissue roll usurped the title of “world’s strongest magnetic field” from the metal titan that had held it for two decades at the Florida State University-headquartered National High Magnetic Field Laboratory. googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-1449240174198-2′); }); And its makers say we ain’t seen nothing yet: By packing an exceptionally high-field magnet into a coil you could pack in a purse, MagLab scientists and engineers have shown a way to build and use electromagnets that are stronger, smaller and more versatile than ever before. “We are really opening a new door,” said MagLab engineer Seungyong Hahn, the mastermind behind the new magnet and an associate professor at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering. “This technology has a very good potential to entirely change the horizons of high-field applications because of its compact nature.” This new magnet is a plucky David to the MagLab’s conventional Goliaths, said National MagLab Director Greg Boebinger. “This is indeed a miniaturization milestone that could potentially do for ...
